What is the Best Worms Game? The Top 5

When the original Worms game first came onto the scene in 1995, it was quickly clear that developer Team17 were onto a winner with their unique artillery tactical video game.

Aptly described as a cross between Cannon Fodder and Lemmings, the brilliance of the original Worms game led to the creation of a long lasting franchise that still releases games today. But what is the best Worms game? We’ve had a go at ranking our top 5. Check it out and let us know if you agree.

5. Worms 3 (Mobile)

It was only a matter of time before we got a decent Worms game for mobile platforms, and Worms 3 seems to be the one to fit the bill. At least for now.

Overseeing your squad of tiny invertebrates is made even easier with a touch screen interface, and with both a solid online multiplayer and single-player mode, Worms 3 takes the essence of the original games and adds its own print to the mix. There’s no doubt that this is one of the best Worms games yet, if only for the ease and accessibility of it.

4. Worms W.M.D.

For many, Worms WMD is the best Worms game ever made, and it was certainly the most ambitious entry to the series that Team17 had produced in a long while.

Released in 2016, Worms WMD utilized 2D graphics and provided a significant redesign of the aesthetics and character drawings. In fact, it was the first major overhaul of character design since Worms 3D

That’s not all that was new, though, and a number of new features were added to the long running franchise, including the use of vehicles and protective shelters for the worms.

If you haven’t tried Worms WMD yet, then you really should, it’s definitely up there as one of the best Worms games in the franchise.

3. Worms Ultimate Mayhem

Not everyone’s favorite game in the franchise, but I love Ultimate Mayhem’s humor, and the amount of content that you get for one game is commendable, especially at the prices you can get nowadays.

The 3D graphics, although not to everybody’s taste, works well in Ultimate Mayhem and makes some of the weapon animations cooler than ever before.

One of the best features of Ultimate Mayhem is the single player campaign mode. It is huge, and engaging, too. In my opinion, it is the best story mode in the series, and for this alone makes Ultimate Mayhem one of the best Worms games around. There is also a multiplayer mode, but it is not so populated, and there are better options if this is your juice.

2. Worms

As the game that started it all off, it’s hard not to include the original near the top of the pile of best Worms games. And in actuality, it thoroughly deserves to be there, too.

Worms was revolutionary in the world of turn-based strategy games, and it brought a light-hearted touch to artillery tactics.

Everyone searching for the best Worms game has probably played the original, so I don’t think there;s much to add. Hearing the worms shout “hadouken!”, “you’ll regret that”, and “oh dear”, will eternally live in the memories of many gamers.

We have creator Andy Davidson to thank for this masterpiece, along with Team17 for having the foresight to know a gem when they saw one.

1. Worms Armageddon

Hands down, the best Worms game in the entire series is Armageddon. Staying true to the original with 2D graphics, unrivalled humor, and charm in abundance, Worms Armageddon is everyone’s favorite for a reason.

With over 50 unique weapons, a long single-player campaign, and an online multiplayer mode that is still vibrant today, WA gets everything right. The fact that the game is fully moddable adds endless life to the game, too, and I can’t see it going anywhere for a long time.

If you’re trying to convince a friend to get into the Worms franchise, go with Armageddon. If they’re not into it, perhaps the series just isn’t for them.
