5 Best Games Like Skyrim for the PC

When it comes to open world RPG games, there is nothing quite like Skyrim. Here at Blog of Games, we love Skyrim, for us, it is one of the best games to ever be released. Plenty of games have tried to emulate its gameplay experience, but few have been successful.

That being said, there are still plenty of games out there that you will be certain to enjoy if you are a fan of the game, and there is only a certain number of times you can follow the path of the dragonborn before turning elsewhere. So, here is our list of the 5 best games like Skyrim for the PC.

5. Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dragon Age: Inquisition is an action role-playing game that was released in 2014 by BioWare Edmonton. The game received almost universal critical acclaim and received several ‘game of the year’ awards.

First off, the game is huge. If you liked the exploration and side quest-rich activities that Skyrim provides, you’ll like this game. It is highly likely that even after completing the 60+ hour story arc, there will be huge expanses of land that you have still yet to explore – and with it, many more secrets and characters to encounter.

The game begins with the player, known as the Inquisitor, being marked by a magical sigil that has the ability to close the “Breach” in the sky that is unleashing various demons and otherworldly creatures to wreak havoc on the inhabitants of Thedas.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is a must try for lovers of role-playing games and we recommend it with confidence as one of the best games like Skyrim for the PC.

4. Divinity II: Ego Draconis

Divinity II: Ego Draconis is an action role-playing game that was first released in 2009 by Belgian game developer Larian Studios. Despite being released 10 years ago, the game stands up well and in the context of this list it is certainly one of the best games like Skyrim for the PC available right now.

The principal focus of the game is to explore the game world and complete quests while interacting with the many NPCs encountered throughout the world of Rivellon. You start the game as a dragon slayer who is nearing the end of their training and acquires special powers to defeat dragons following a successful mission in the nearby Broken Valley.

Throughout the journey, players will also encounter the main antagonist, Damian, the villain from the previous Divinity game, who was returned to seek vengeance on those who imprisoned him.

The game is content-rich, and the main story arc alone will take at least 30 hours to complete from beginning to end. Yet, there is so much more to the game than the main plot, numerous side quests and exporable areas are littered throughout the world and it is often necessary to complete them in order to sufficiently level up for the main quests.

When the game starts the character does not have a class, but as the game evolves the player can gain skills from the various classes such as the priest, mage, ranger, warrior, and dragon knight. Gaining these skills really make the game exciting and there is hours of fun to be had simply experimenting with the different ways you can level and specialize your character.

If dragons are why you came to this article, then you won’t be disappointed with Divinity II. After a certain number of quests are completed, the player acquires the ability to turn into a dragon – this dragon also has a set of equipment and skills that the player must manage.

All in all, Divinity II is a wonderful game and players should not be put off by its fairly distant release date. This is, in our opinion, absolutely worthy of its place as one of the 5 best games like Skyrim for the PC.

It is hard to believe that Kingdom Come: Deliverance is Warhorse Studios first ever title. This game is neatly polished and well-constructed, and it is rare that games like this come about, particularly on a game developer’s first attempt.

The attention to detail in this game is impressive – every setting, house, NPC, interactive item feels unique and a different story awaits you behind every door. The game is huge, and the graphics are beautiful. Kingdom Come: Deliverance feels like no other game in the genre – it gives players a unique sense of vastness that, when coupled with impressive movement mechanics, add a high level of immersion.

The game has some of the best voice acting and narration that we’ve ever seen in the action role-playing genre. Every dialogue is expertly delivered, and not only provides immersion and context to the story, but also offers a rich insight into the history of the Kingdom of Bohemia – if you’re a history buff, you’ll love this aspect.

The combat system is fun, but as not one of the best features of the game. Granted, some of the duels require patience, thought and skill, but the lack of a third-person perspective made combat feel repetitive and, at times, a bit of a drag.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance was one of our favorites from 2018 and we played spent many enjoyable hours engrossed in medieval Bohemia, despite it not being in our preferred RPG format of third person. Don’t let that put you off, as it seems to have done for so many, this game is a thoroughly immersive and captivating action role-playing

2. Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited

When it comes to the best games like Skyrim for the PC, The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited is a no-brainer. What started out as a buggy and slightly flawed MMORPG has now become one of the most enjoyable online role-playing game experiences and continues to get better and better.

The Elder Scrolls Online – Gameplay

As with all Elder Scrolls games, with this one you can expect a high level of adventure, immersion, and unique lore. Yet, with this one, you get to experience it all with over 3 million players in an online universe.

The game is set in Tamriel and takes place 800 years before the events of Oblivion. Players create a character that becomes known as a vestige, or soulless wanderer, and traverse the world to discover secrets of their past and learn more about the Daedric lore that they find themselves embroiled in.

Elder Scrolls Online has a main story line that players must follow to advance throughout the game and is accompanied by thousands of side quests that require the player to explore the huge open world that they find themselves in. The diverse landscapes available really make the game feel rather grand, and a sense of immersion is realized as you wander through the different environments.

Character customization is intricate and detailed, and players can choose from a total of 5 different classes and an impressive 10 different classes, all of which offer unique abilities and perks. The combat system is similar to other games in the series and players can upgrade their weapons, armor, and magic abilities, while finding some elegant looking gear to customize their characters along the way.

The Elder Scrolls Online is a must-try for lovers of role-playing games like Skyrim, and you are certain to like this game whether you have played previous games in the series or not.

1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an action role-playing game that was released in 2015 by Polish game developer CD Projekt. The game follows the charismatic Geralt of Rivia as he trails the path of Ciri with the help of his witcher senses various companions.

The game plays from a third person perspective (the best way to play action RPGs in our opinion) and gamers are quickly immersed into the Continent with some stunning and colorful visuals. The game is beautiful, and it still holds up well now years after its initial release.

The gameplay in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is what makes the game so great. The story is engaging, the characters are charming, and the side quests are fun (hours of fun can be had with Gwent!). Overall, the game does a good job of not taking itself too seriously and a perfect mix of light-hearted quips and emotionally charged questing make the game completely engaging and enjoyable from beginning to end.

This medieval-themed fantasy also has a great combat system that has an Assassin’s Creed feel to it and never seems to get boring throughout the course of the entire game – it is certainly more than a ‘hack and slash’ and is realistic enough to not be compared to most of the colorfully whirling combat systems in the action role-playing genre.

I don’t want to give too much away about the game’s story, but if you haven’t tried this game yet, you must. If you are looking for the best games like Skyrim for the PC, then this is THE best. You won’t be disappointed.
