5 Best PlayStation VR Horror Games

Playing horror games in virtual reality is, in our opinion, the best way to play any game in the genre. Some great VR horror games have been released to the PlayStation VR headset in the past few years (check out our other list of some of the best VR horror games), but some not-so-great games have also been made available too.

To narrow down the choices for your next purchase, here at Blog of Games we have compiled a list of the 5 best PlayStation VR horror games for you.

5. Affected: The Manor VR

Affected: The Manor VR is a game abundant in jump scares and cheap thrills and is one of the most intense VR horror games available right now. This first-person survival horror game was developed by Fallen Planet Studios and is a title you’ll be sure to like if you’re a horror aficionado.

Affected – The Manor VR

The game provides stereotypical horror and doesn’t apologise for it – nor should it. In Affected: The Manor VR players make their way around a dimly lit haunted mansion akin to the live action horror walkthroughs that you can find at amusement parks. The experience is a similar one, too, yet even more terrifying.

There is only one way to go in Affected: The Manor VR and if you find a door unlocked, then you shouldn’t be there. There are no puzzles and you can’t die, which makes the immersion is fluid and constant. As with all VR horror experiences, lighting and audio play a big part in the atmosphere of the game, and this is something Fallen Planet Studios obviously put a lot of work into getting just right.

Affected: The Manor VR doesn’t offer much in terms of story and replay value, but that shouldn’t deter you if all you’re after is a feeling overwhelming fright at regular intervals, littered around a creepy haunted mansion. Somehow, the linear and uncomplicated gameplay allows you to focus on the scares the game provides, and there are plenty.

This is definitely one of the 5 best PlayStation VR games available right now, and you should not hesitate to try it out. This game will scare you.

4. The Inpatient VR

The Inpatient VR is a survival horror game released in 2018 by Supermassive Games, the same developers from Until Dawn. This game serves as a prequel to Until Dawn and is every bit as creepy and psychologically challenging.

The Inpatient VR Review

In The Inpatient VR, players take on the role of a patient at Blackwood Sanatorium, which is owned by the unnerving Dr Bragg. The protagonist wakes up with no memory of their past and struggles recall and understand why exactly they are situated in the asylum in the first place. What ensues is a psychological rollercoaster with some spine-chilling and thought-provoking scenes that all build up to an intense climax that will leave players in a state of pensive fear for days after completion.

The game plays out largely as an interactive cinematic experience in which player choices affect the outcome of the game. This adds great replay value to the game and there are multiple endings for players to achieve. Another great feature of The Inpatient VR is the voice activation command, whereby players can literally respond to character interactions by talking to their VR headsets to trigger their command.

All in all, the game is an intense horror experience with a great plotline to boot. This, coupled with some haunting visuals and aptly atmospheric audio, make The Inpatient VR one of the best PlayStation VR horror games available to play right now.

3. The Exorcist: Legion VR

The Exorcist: Legion VR is a virtual reality survival horror experience developed by Wolf & Wood, a developer who has not previously forayed into major triple-A titles, but has exclusively worked with VR experiences. This game was released as a complete package for the PSVR in 2018, having previously been available in staggered chapters on other VR headsets.

The Exorcist – Legion VR

In The Exorcist: Legion VR, players control a detective through the first-person perspective and explore different environments in order to solve the mystery of a different case in each chapter. In the first chapter, for example, the detective attempts to figure out the homicide of a priest at a church. Each chapter is unique and equally engaging.

The game is visually impressive, and the developers seemingly made a decision to favour a realistic approach to the graphics. This serves only to add to the immersion and, hence, the atmosphere of the game. The audio is correspondingly chilling, and this game evoked feelings of terror in a way like no other that I’d played before.

The Exorcist: Legion VR didn’t receive universal acclaim, however, and many users had gripes with the controls, the lack of storytelling, and limited environments in each chapter. Despite this, from a pure horror perspective, The Exorcist: Legion VR is a terrifying and immersive experience that has the ability to leave players motionless with fear. Because of this, we deem the game a worthy addition to this list of the 5 best PlayStation VR horror games.

2. Resident Evil 7 VR

As if the standard version of this game wasn’t scary enough. Resident Evil 7 VR transposes perfectly into the virtual reality world in a way that will make you question your motives to have ever entered the alternate horror dimension but will keep you coming back for more due to its sheer intensity.

Resident Evil 7 VR – Mia

Even if you have already played the standard version, Resident Evil 7 VR will multiply the terror and then add a little. You can’t hide behind the analogue sticks, you can’t look at the TV through interlaced fingers, Jack is coming for you full-throttle through your PSVR headset and there is absolutely nothing you can do to dampen the dread.

Resident Evil 7 VR can be both mentally and physically draining, but it’s totally worth it. As VR horror games go, this has a rich plotline that can provide around 12 hours of gameplay. Not only is the story a good length, but it’s also captivating and has some bizarre twists that will keep the game in your mind long after you’ve completed it.

The atmosphere is eerie, and the music is chilling. All aspects of this game are perfectly combined to create a truly great horror game experience, and this is certainly one of the 5 best PlayStation VR horror games that you can play on your PSVR headsets right now. 1. Transference VR

Transference VR is a psychological horror game released in 2018 and developed in collaboration by Ubisoft Montreal and SpectreVision. The game has received numerous accolades, including the “Immersive Reality Game of the Year” (D.I.C.E. Awards) and “Best VR Game” (Golden Joystick Awards).

Transference VR – Raymond

Transference VR takes place within a corrupted simulation created by a maverick scientist named Raymond. The simulation is formed from the “brain data” of Raymond, his wife and his son. In the game, players enter the family home, which is littered with the collective memories of the family. Their stories are told through interactions with the environment throughout the game and it quickly becomes apparent that this family was struggling with some severe problems. It is the objective of the player to solve puzzles and piece together clues that will help repair the lives of Raymond’s family.

The story is the winning feature of Transference VR and living out the experience of what actually happened to the family becomes an intriguing, intense, and immersive rollercoaster that is captivating from start to finish. This immersion is complimented with high-quality production value, with crisp and realistic visuals and a haunting sound design that stands up to any other title in the genre.

Although Transference VR is not your typical horror title, it is psychologically intense and provides plenty of jump scares to satisfy the hardiest of horror aficionados. All in all, Transference VR is a brilliantly constructed VR horror game and is totally worthy of its top place on our list of the 5 best PlayStation VR horror games.
