Clowns often appear in the horror genre and it’s easy to see why – they’re terrifying. In fact, a fear of clowns is such a common phobia that there is even a word for it, coulrophobia. Yet, although they appear often in horror movies (It, Poltergeist, Killjoy, to name a few), they seldom take center stage in the domain of horror games.
Fans of clown horror need not worry, though, as there are still some gems out there in the gaming world. Here, we’ve compiled a list of the most terrifying horror games with clowns.
Bewilder House
Bewilder House Gameplay
Bewilder House is a lot of fun. This puzzle-horror game, developed by Minoteam, came into the limelight after being the subject of a playthrough by the YouTuber Markiplier in 2013. If you’re someone who prefers to watch other people play games, his playthrough is a great option for Bewilder House.
Out of all the games on this list, the clown in Bewilder House is probably the most terrifying. In the creepiest possible way, the clown follows you around when you’re not looking and appears at the most inopportune times to provide some extreme and amusing moments of dread.
For those who are familiar with Emily Wants to Play, the gameplay of Bewilder House offers a similar experience. When you’re not looking at the evil clown assailant, he will move towards you, and occasionally jump right in front of you. If you keep your gaze fixed on him, however, the clown freezes on the spot, staring into your soul with a frightening grin.
The puzzles in Bewilder House make the game an interesting option within the horror game genre, and some of them may take you a good few attempts to figure out.
Not a Prank: Attack of the Horror Clowns
Not a Prank PC Horror Game
Not a Prank is an indie adventure horror game that was developed by WTF Games for the PC. It was released in October 2019 and has had some glowing reviews from its gamers.
This game is especially satisfying for those with a severe aversion to clowns. In Not a Prank, you get to beat the living daylights out of them with an array of different weapons. The fun comes at a cost, though. These clowns hunt you down in masses, and the dark and eerie setting allows for some rather intense jump scares.
Despite being rather limited in content, the game can provide tons of fun. The boss battles will leave you with a great sense of satisfaction, too.
You can find Not a Prank on the Steam store here.
Scary Clown: Horror Game Adventure
Scary Clown – Horror Game Adventure
Scary Clown: Horror Game Adventure is an Android game by developer Evil Land that places the player inside a mysterious haunted mansion (obviously) and gives them just 5 days to escape.
There is no respite, either. This clown relentlessly hunts you down with every passing second, using the sounds you make as clues to your whereabouts. In order to survive, you’ll have to remain as silent as possible, and you’ll also have to search for the keys that are hidden in various locations throughout the house.
The game is not without its flaws, and some work could go into the house design and sound effects. Yet, despite this, the game has a certain eerie charm, and it is certainly worth checking out if you enjoy the creepiness of clowns in horror games.
Emily Wants to Play
Emily Wants To Play – Scary Clown
Emily Wants to Play is one of the best horror games of recent years, and is a favorite of the Blog of Games team, particularly when it comes to VR horror games.
In the game, players have to survive from 11 PM to 6 AM in a house haunted by a terrifying young girl and her toy. From 1 AM until 4 AM, though, the game gets notably creepier, especially for those afraid of clowns.
Mr Tatters, as the clown is known, appears at regular intervals throughout the game wearing a blue top hat, stereotypical clown shoes, and rather sinister-looking clownish makeup.
Without giving too much away, it is worth noting that you must figure out the pattern of the clown’s AI in order to progress to the next stage of the game.
Death Park
Death Park Clown – Gampelay
Death Park is a scary clown survival horror game available for the PC and Android and iOS devices. It was released in 2019 by Euphoria Games and received positive reviews.
The aim of the game is to explore an abandoned theme park, solving puzzles along the way to help you escape. If there’s one thing scarier than clowns, it’s encountering clowns in an abandoned circus. You’ll need to avoid the evil clown if you want to see this game through to the end.
The graphics aren’t the best, but there is a lot of gameplay value in this clown horror game – it does a particularly good job at creating a tense and spooky atmosphere. Read more about Death Park here.
BONUS GAME: Horror Clown Pennywise
Horror Clown Pennywise Gameplay
Horror Clown Survival is a simple horror game for Android devices that follows the infamous clown Pennywise. Playing as Bill, you must rescue your friends from the evil clown, who has kidnapped them and trapped them in his house.
You can use an assortment of weapons to defeat the assailant, including guns and various environmental objects within your vicinity.
The graphics in Horror Clown Pennywise aren’t the best, but they don’t need to be. The game does an incredible job at creating suspense and fear and is a must-play for Android horror game fans. Fans of the movie IT will particularly enjoy this one.
