The 2024 gaming year is approaching its conclusion, and a notable theme among this year’s most significant releases is that many of these games have been unexpected successes. While 2023 showcased modern masterpieces such as Baldur’s Gate 3, Street Fighter 6, and Alan Wake 2, 2024 has brought us hits like Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Dragon’s Dogma 2, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
Although these anticipated titles were almost guaranteed to receive high review scores, it is the surprise hits that have taken center stage this year. We’ve seen some fantastic games seemingly emerge from nowhere, including the action-packed Helldivers 2, the quirky British humor of Thank Goodness You’re Here, and not one but two new entries in the Prince of Persia series that boldly explore fresh directions.
Alongside must-play indie titles, strong performances from major franchises, and a few hidden gems, 2024 has proven to be a year where both the best and the most unusual games have emerged on top.
Similar to last year, we’ll be tracking the top games of the year. For inclusion on this list, a game must achieve a review score of at least 8 (which is quite impressive!) or higher from GameSpot. However, this doesn’t mean that games with lower scores (or those we didn’t have a chance to review) should be overlooked, as there is still plenty of enjoyment to be found in titles that didn’t reach this benchmark.
Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
The first game to achieve the rare 10/10 score in 2024, Shadow of the Erdtree embodies everything you adore about Elden Ring, presented with flawless execution. This expansion not only concludes the epic narrative of Elden Ring but also introduces fresh gameplay elements, even more challenging boss fights, and breathtaking new locations to an already outstanding game.
Astro Bot
Astro’s Playroom has been one of the top free games on PS5 for years, and with Astro Bot, Team Asobi has established itself as one of Sony’s premier first-party studios. This delightful adventure is irresistibly charming, providing a consistently enjoyable experience thanks to its solid platforming mechanics, an abundance of hidden secrets, and the exceptional utilization of the DualSense controller, which immerses you in Astro’s journey.
Dragon’s Dogma 2
Twelve years after the release of the original game, Dragon’s Dogma 2 expands upon the finest elements of that epic fantasy story to provide a captivating open-world RPG experience. While it may not be the most groundbreaking sequel, its core strengths are enhanced by spontaneous moments, technological advancements, and diverse gameplay, resulting in an exhilarating sense of adventure.
Hades 2
Even in early access, Hades 2 is proving to be a formidable contender for game of the year. With a wealth of content available from the start, developer Supergiant Games has built upon the concepts of the original game, introducing a more intricate combat system and a captivating storyline.
Helldivers 2
Transitioning from a top-down twin-stick shooter format to a third-person perspective, Helldivers 2 offers an action-packed journey across alien worlds. In a competitive live-service landscape, developer Arrowhead has created an enjoyable experience that shines when played with friends. The game features satisfying gunplay and maintains a sense of freshness through clever design choices.
Persona 3: Reload
Regarded as one of the greatest Persona games ever, Persona 3: Reload is a full remake designed for modern audiences. It offers the ultimate way to experience this classic, which features one of the franchise’s darkest narratives. Persona 3: Reload thoroughly reimagines the game, making its combat more accessible, enhancing the visuals for a stunning visual experience, and featuring an unforgettable soundtrack that ties it all together.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
Following an era of 3D adventures, Prince of Persia’s return to its 2D origins offers a refreshing change for the franchise. By cleverly integrating metroidvania elements into its design, The Lost Crown features precise combat and a beautifully crafted world, creating a harmonious experience. This game is not just an exciting metroidvania; it is a meticulously refined addition to the genre that will likely serve as inspiration for future titles in the years ahead.
Black Myth: Wukong
Black Myth: Wukong defies the typical souls-like expectations, presenting an adaptation of Journey to the West that immerses you in a series of breathtaking boss battles where you must employ every tactic to survive. Although there are occasional moments of tedium amidst the exhilarating and visually spectacular encounters, the game remains a refined and thrilling action-RPG that offers a refreshing gameplay experience.
Stellar Blade
Drawing inspiration from titles such as Bayonetta and Nier: Automata, Stellar Blade is an ambitious action game that has some rough edges. However, if you can look past these imperfections, there’s a lot of enjoyment to be found in its engaging Souls-like combat, formidable enemies, and stunning graphics.
