1. Anachronox

Number one on the list is another oldie, but a game that is often forgotten and under-appreciated. Anachronox is a light-hearted role-playing game that was developed by Ion Storm and published by Eidos Interactive in 2001.

Anachronox - Review
Anachronox – Gameplay

The game is set in a futuristic fictional universe and takes place on the eponymous planet of Anachronox, a place parts of the world is disrupted by chaos and social disorder – themes prevalent in the cyberpunk genre.

Anachronox follows the story of Sly “Boots” Bucelli, a charismatic pirate who has come into trouble with the law. Boots operates a detective agency above a rundown bar in South Anachronox. The player is commissioned to find some MysTech – mystical rocks that once belonged to an extinct race. On his quest to locate these rocks, Boots is joined by his robot companion, PAL-18, a maverick recluse, Grumpos, and various other weird and wonderful characters.

The gameplay in Anachronox has a JRPG feel to it and is similar to games like the Final Fantasy series. You control a part of three different characters who explore a vast world with numerous different space-age and cyberpunk locations. Characters can be swapped in and out of your team depending on which skills you want to use in combat.

Without a doubt, the game’s story and quirky humour are what make Anachronox such a great game. In its own charming way, the game contains suspense, thought-provoking dialogue and light-hearted quips, all of which combine to make Anachronox one of the best cyberpunk games around today.

  1. Omg I got so caught up Cyberpunk 2077 that I forgot all the other jewels like Deux. I just bought Shadowrun on steam, can’t wait to give it a go but Anachronox, just wow! I love how Eidos adopts some influence of JRPG on it, I remember waiting for it to come out on the PlayStation but it got cancelled :/

    • I really can’t wait for Cyberpunk 2077, too. I think when that game is released I’ll have to set myself strict rules to avoid becoming a gaming recluse! I think Anachronox is greatly under-recognised, which is a shame as I’m sure many would enjoy it. Thanks for comment!

  2. For an avid gamer like me, it seems very strange for me not to know about this particular cyberpunk genre of games. Wow! But then, this genre seems very interesting to me especially the games reviewed under it. They have great storylines and the little images and videos attached says a lot about the immersive graphics displays of these games. This would be my next area of concentration. I will try to play this genre too. Great post

    • The cyberpunk genre has enjoyed something of a mild resurgence recently, I think partially due to the recent releases of Blade Runner 2049 and Altered Carbon, and gaming developers have taken note. Look out for Cyberpunk 2077 if you like the look of these games. Thanks for the comment!

  3. I’ve been a bit curious about games other than soccer and your review has made me feel like I’m not a fan of games at all…….what you listed here (cyberpunk games) are totally new to me as the forward games I’ve known and played are Vice City, Wolverine, Hulk…just to name a few. I guess my research work has drained that interest in finding out about trending games since I started my Masters.

But you’ve provided me something to kick start again in games so thanks for the information.

    • There are so many different genres to investigate and cyberpunk games are a great place to start if you’re looking to get reinitiated into gaming. The dystopian settings in these games are usually very immersive and engaging. That being said, I also live Vice City! Thanks for the comment.

  4. It is amazing how far technology has come and the graphics that are in the online games, these days. My sons are avid players of online games and have spoken to me a lot about getting online and playing. I keep busy most days and do not have much time for gaming, however, I have sat down and played a few times with them.

The times I have sat down and played I have been amazed at the graphics and the stories behind the games. Trying to decide what to play, what I would be interested in is not easy and I appreciate the time you have taken in this post and highlighting a few of the games and making it easier for those of us who have limited time. Your post was insightful and very detailed. Thank you.

    • Yeah, some of the graphics that you say in modern games is quite breathtaking, and it lends itself very well to cyberpunk games as its all about high tech and low life. Thanks for the comment!

  5. Hi there Richard!

    Love your website.

I like and agree with your list, and I agree with you that Anachronox is such an underrated game. I don’t like such heavy-themed games, so I like that this one is more light-hearted and has some great humor within it’s theme and dialogue.

I actually did not know that cyberpunk was an actual genre, which is so interesting! Dystopian futuristic games and books my favorite, and I think cyberpunk falls into that category in some ways.

Thank you for the great post. All the best.

    • Hey Lizie, thanks for the comment!

Yeah, Anachronox had that perfect balance of light-hearted humour and plot intrigue that so many games fail to get right. Cyberpunk is definitely a genre you should investigate if you’re into the theme of dystopian futures, and if books are your thing, I’d recommend trying Neuromancer.

      Take care!

  6. I love the way observer works. It is one of the games I so much cherished.  There will be drastic decrease in crime rate if this habit is adopt worldwide. When I read the story behind observer, i was left in at the confusing junction because I don’t know who the observer master mind was between Adam and Daniel. Adam wanted to transfer the power to Daniel but I don’t know if he latter  accepted it. Apart that, I like the fact that it can browse through brain even when the body is unconscious or is laying dead.

    • Hey Stella, yeah I was completely absorbed by Observer, too. It’s one of those games that you just don’t want to put down. I really recommend SOMA as well. I figure you’d enjoy it if you like these types of games
