FFVIII has some of the toughest bosses in the entire franchise. In fact, in my opinion, the most difficult boss from all of the FF games is found in number 8 (skip to the end to find out which!)
Some bosses are tougher than others, though, and we’ve had a go at narrowing down the most challenging, let us know if you agree in the comment section below. Here are the hardest Final Fantasy 8 bosses.

7. Tonberry King
The Tonberry King FF8
Tonberry King is one of the many optional bosses found in FFVII, but that’s not to say he’s easy.
Finding him is fairly easy, you just have to go to the Centra Ruins and kill an ungodly amount of Tonberries. After a certain amount of time (around 20-25 fights), the Tonberry King will turn up to challenge you.
I found success casting meltdown and then just continuously attacking him, but it can take a while.
6. Cerberus
Cereberus GF FF8
Cerberus is a Guardian Force that allows the party to use one more magic spell every turn.
What makes Cerberus one of the hardest Final Fantasy 8 bosses is that it is encountered early on, in Galbadia Garden during the Battle of the Gardens
Just be careful when Cerberus’ HP is down, as it casts Haste and can cause quite a bit of bother.
5. Diablos
Diablos FF8
Diablos is another Guardian Force optional boss in FF8. You encounter it by using the Magical Lamp that is given to Squall by Headmaster Cid after the SeeD graduation.
A tip for defeating Diablos is to use Darkness and Slow, as the winged beast is particularly vulnerable to these status effects.
This is a particularly long fight, so be prepared to put in a shift!
4. Ultima Weapon
Ultima Weapon FF8
Superbosses are never easy in this game, and this Guardian Force is a superboss not to be trifled with. Indeed, I’m sure many players would consider Ultima Weapon to be one of the hardest Final Fantasy 8 bosses.
There is a way to make this battle easier, though. Have party members cast Holy War or Hero straight away, before using Meltdown and attacking the Ultima Weapon with your Limit Breaks until you defeat it.
3. Jumbo Cactuar
Jumbo Cactuar FF8
Jumbo Cactuar is one of the most annoying, and definitely one of the hardest Final Fantasy 8 bosses. Defeating it is worth it, though, as you acquire the Cactuar Guardian Force.
To find the Jumbo Cactuar, use the airship to head to Cactuar Island, and keep your eye out for large cactuses on the map.
A pro tip for defeating Jumbo Cactuar is to wait until it starts hesitating, and then unleash three Water attacks on it using Triple. Just look out for the 10,000 Needles attack, it has the potential to wreak havoc on your party.
2. Ultimecia
Sorceress Ultimecia FF8
Ninety-nine percent of the time, if you asked people what the hardest Final Fantasy 8 bosses were, Ultimecia would be in the top 2. This is an epic fight.
Ultimecia, who is the main antagonist in the game, is incredibly hard to beat and the feeling that you get from beating this powerful sorceress is incredibly rewarding and makes the slog worthwhile.
To make this as easy as possible, you’ll want to get all of your party to a good level first. After that, stock up on plentiful Aura’s and refine the Gilgamesh card to acquire 10 Holy Wars.
1. Omega Weapon
Omega Weapon FF8
Although the Omega Weapon is an optional boss, it is undoubtedly the most difficult boss in FF8. This is even confirmed by the game itself. Beating the Omega Weapon unlocks the Proof of Omega – which has no use other than being a pat on the back for beating the hardest Final Fantasy 8 boss.
The Omega Weapon is hidden in Ultimecia’s castle. I have only beaten Omega Weapon once in the game, so take my advice with a pinch of salt. I found success by using Holy Wars. Some may see this as an easy way out, but it worked so I’m happy with it!
