Ever since its release in 2011, Skyrim has been providing endless amounts of fun for gamers across various platforms.
One of the reasons that the game has such high replay value is because of an active modding community that regularly releases new mods and updates for users to enjoy.
Some are great, some no so much. Here we try to answer the question – what are the best mods for Skyrim? All links to the Skyrim mod downloads are at the end of the article.
Sjel Blad Castle
Sjel Blad Castle – or “Soul Blade” Castle in Norwegian – is a huge player home castle that adds various perks including a vault, sanctuary, companions, stables, guards, and a number of other great features.
The fort is located in the mountains to the east of Helgen and is quite a site to behold. From the towers and expansive balconies on the castle’s exterior to the training courtyard and common area in the interior, you can easily get lost with all this site has to offer.
There a few great player home mods for the game, but Sjel Blad Castle is definitely one of the best Skyrim mods if you’re looking for a new base for your character.
Game of Thrones Skyrim Mods – Followers and Armor
If you’re anything like me then excitement of seeing Game of Thrones and Skyrim in the same sentence is almost too much to handle. I write this just before the finale to the eighth and final season of GoT, so maybe that influences this inclusion in the list of the best mods for Skyrim.
These mods do a great job combining two of the greatest medieval fantasy worlds of all time and the GoT characters fit seamlessly into the land of Skyrim.
There’s something quite satisfying about peering over your shoulder and seeing Daenerys or Jon Snow following behind. And who wouldn’t feel safe with Khal Drogo watching their back?
This is probably the best Skyrim mod out there for enhancing the visual experience of the game. Vividian ENB augments the lightning, fog, clouds, water, colors, and weather display capabilities.
Perhaps its greatest feature is the extended weather capability. This enhances the effects of each weather system and adds a level of realism to the game that few other mods do.
The mod also completely overhauls the snow in Skyrim, making it react better with lighting and, ultimately, creating a more real-life experience of snowy days and nights.
Diverse Dragons Collection SE
Of all the dragon mods available, this one is the best one I’ve tried so far. In this Diverse Dragons Collection, 28 new dragons are added, all of which with their own individual texture and model.
The dragons also become more challenging with this mod, scaling their difficulty to the level of your character. Add this to almost 20 new abilities that the dragons can use and defeating them becomes so much more satisfying.
If you don’t like any of the dragons in the game, there is also a feature which allows you to choose which of the dragons show up. This is definitely one of the best mods for Skyrim to try.
Lanterns of Skyrim – All in One
This last mod is a really simple one, but one that really changes the game for the better. This mod adds lanterns to villages, towns, roads and other settlements throughout Skyrim.
It may sound like nothing, but the warm lighting from the lanterns add a real cosy feeling to the world and somehow increase its immersion.
The mod also has a configuration menu which allows players to decide what time the lanterns turn on and off, and which locations the lights should be activated or not.
SKYUI is a simple mod that overhauls the original user interface to make it easier to navigate and more user friendly.
The latest version (SKYUI5) also now works for all menu types – including apparel, enchanting, smithing and alchemy.
SKYUI is definitely one of the best Skyrim mods available to download as it makes navigating the menus so much faster and smoother. It is also available in multiple languages.
