5. Tales of Berseria
Tales of Berseria is a Japanese RPG developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It is the sixteenth main title in the Tales series and is a prequel to the 2015 game, Tales of Zestiria.
The game is set in an archipelagic continent ruled by the Holy Midgand Empire. Islands and areas within this continent are split into different territories and inhabited by different races. The Malakhim are a race that is manipulated by humans and used as slaves for their magical prowess. Within this world, humans can get infected by a disease called Daemonblight, transforming into peace-threatening Daemons in the process. In order to remove the threat of these Daemons, soldiers of the Holy Midgand Empire (known as Exorcists) are trying to purge their existence, becoming relentless and emotionless in the process.
The protagonist in Tales of Berseria is a 19-year-old named Velvet Crowe. Velvet is part Daemon owing to an incident in which her brother-in-law tried to sacrifice her during a ritual called the “Advent”. After this ritual had mutated her arm, Velvet was imprisoned on an island called Titania, where she remained for 3 years before being released by a Malakhim companion, Laphicet.
The gameplay is similar to previous Tales games. Characters interact with each other through Skits, in which they are represented by head and shoulder avatars in animated clips – some of which can be rather humorous, whereas others can be darkly serious. The game also continues to use a variation of the Linear Motion Battle System, in which players can freely move themselves and the camera around in a real-time battle arena. In Berseria, there is an introduction of the Soul Gauge system, which adds a great fluidity and tactical element to the game by setting the pace and chain of your combat attacks.
The dark story line is one of the game’s highlights, which is delivered at a lengthy but timely pace. This does come with some trade-offs though, which stop Tales of Berseria from being one of the great RPGs. The visuals are highly underwhelming, with no real difference to their previous few titles, and at times some of the locations that you travel through can become quite samey.
All in all, though, this is a game definitely worth considering if you’re looking to play some of the best RPG games for the PS4. If you want to find out more, check out the links and video below.
4. Monster Hunter: World
Monster Hunter: World is an action role-playing game that was released by Capcom in 2018. It is part of the Monster Hunter series and takes on previous elements of titles in the series.
In the game, the player takes on the role of a hunter who roams environmental spaces looking for monsters to trap and kill in order to loot, craft, and upgrade weapons and armor. The general idea is that as you increase your level through improving the equipment available to you, you are able hunt the more difficult foes which yield higher rewards – the ultimate goal being to unravel the mystery of a recurring Elder Dragon.
The improvements made on the previous installments are to be enjoyed by those both new and already familiar with the franchise. Players are no longer required to trawl through seemingly endless amounts of text-based information to find relevant information. Now, a Handler follows players around providing information via vocal clues as you navigate complex areas with increasingly difficult monsters.
Another improvement in this title is the improved artificial intelligence of the monsters, which now have complex and unique interactions with their environments – interactions which make you believe that this world is real, creating a great feeling of immersion. The game can be enjoyed solo, with well over 60 hours of quests available to players. There is also the option of connecting with other players online, allowing for some tactical and well-thought-out hunting with companions of different combat capabilities.
Monster Hunter: World is a phenomenal game that is well worthy of its place within this list of best RPG games for the PS4. In addition, this game can most certainly be enjoyed by persons new to franchise, despite familiar elements and themes being carried over from previous games. We strongly recommend you try this game if you own a PS4 and are an RPG game aficionado.

3. Final Fantasy XV
Regular readers of Blog of Games will know that we are huge fans of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy series, and so it is probably no surprise to find this game on our list. Released for the PlayStation 4 in 2016. Final Fantasy XV is a role-playing game featuring an action-based battle system and an open world environment.
Set in the beautiful and diverse world of Eos, players follow the story of Noctis, who at the game’s inception is en route to an arranged marriage in the city of Altissia, where he will be united with the main heroine in the story, Lunafreya. Before the wedding can take place, the city is overthrown by Lunafreya’s father in an event which leads to the death of Noctis’s father, King Regis. The main story focusses on Noctis’s journey – accompanied by his friends – to take back the throne of Altissia and restore equilibrium to the world.
Final Fantasy XV – Noctis
The game has all the usual characteristics that make Final Fantasy games so great – quirky characters, chocobos, weird monsters, and so on. Add to this a vast world swarming with side quests and NPCs willing to task you with missions ranging from hunting to farming, and Final Fantasy 15 becomes a rather complete RPG experience that takes advantage of its open world in creative fashion.

Upgradable items and weapons offer an element of character customization that allows you to alter the traits and synergies of your gear. That, though, is really the full extent of any customization available in the game without purchasing extra outfits and equipment. Speaking of characters, their depth and likability does fall short of some of the other games in the series, especially in the beginning, but as the story develops you will learn more about each of Noctis’s companions, and each will find themselves ingratiating themselves to you.
Though it may not go down as one of the franchise’s greatest games, it is still a worthy addition to the series, and certainly a welcome addition to RPG gaming scene on the PS4. This is a game definitely worth investigating.

2. Persona 5
Persona 5 was a slow burner for me, as I’m sure it was for others, too. To be completely honest, I wasn’t sure I was even enjoying it for the first few hours of gameplay. I’d heard great things about it, though, so I perservered. Before long, I was completely engrossed in the game and it took a lot to put it down.
Persona 5 – Joker
This JRPG has insurmountable charm – the music, the eccentric characters, the artstyle, and pretty much everything you enounter in the game. You’ll lose yourself fast in this game trying to pass exams, fine-tuning your battle prowess, navigating the calendar, and forming relationships with the people that you meet along the way.
You don’t even have to have played the previous Persona games to get something out of this. In fact, there are many anectodal reports of P5 being the first game bought in the franchise, and it then going on to being one of their favorite games of all time.
If you don’t particularly like the anime style, I urge you to put your misgivings aside and give P5a try, this is easily one of the best RPG games for the PS4 and a game that all fans of the genre should at least try.
1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
If you are new to RPG games, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the place to start. The only concern being that all other games could feel inferior after playing it. Not only is it one of the best RPG games for the PS4, it is one of the best games ever made across all platforms and genres.
Published by Polish game developer CD Projekt in 2015, The Witcher 3 is an action role-playing game that follows the journey of protagonist Geralt of Rivia as he searches for his missing adopted daughter, Ciri, who herself is being sought out by the dark and eerie Wild Hunt.
The Witcher 3 – Geralt of Rivia
Following Geralt via third person perspective through the colorful and visually enticing open world environment, players quickly get immersed into the game with its engaging story line and charming characters. The player can choose to interact with various NPCs throughout the world, taking on side various side quests as he plies his trade as a witcher, using adept combat and magical skills to help people as he sees fit. A minigame called Gwent is available to play within the Witcher universe, and is thoroughly addictive, so much so that it has become a game in its own right.
This medieval fantasy has a combat system that rivals the Assassin’s Creed series, an open world that stands up well against Skyrim, a music score that Final Fantasy would be proud of, and a story that will keep you as engrossed as that of The Last of Us.
There isn’t much more I can say about The Witcher 3, you simply have to try it. It is one game that most definitely lives up to its reputation and is, without doubt, one of the best RPG games for the PS4. If you want to find out more, check out the video below.
