5. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

It seems an obvious place to start if you’re looking for games like Breath of the Wild, and Skyward Sword is every bit as good as it. Some even argue that it’s better, but in my book there’s no need to pick favorites between two greats.

One of Skyward Sword’s strong points is its story and, although it is more played in a more linear style a la traditional Zelda games, it is thoroughly engaging and sucks you in right from the outset.

Where Skyward Sword has the upper hand on BOTW is its dungeons and story, but in terms of beauty and freedom, BOTW does better.

In truth, if you liked Breath of the Wild and the Zelda canon in general, then it’s almost certain that you will love Skyward Sword.

4. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey

AC Odyssey - Alexios
AC Odyssey – Alexios

AC Odyssey is one of the best Assassins Creed games to have ever been released. It is similar to Breath of the WIld in the sense that you get to explore an open world, and you scale up your player while discovering new enemies along the way.

In some regards, AC Odyssey offers a better open world experience, so if this is what you liked most about BOTW then this game is a good place to start. If you’re a Greek mythology aficionado, then the fun and engagement is increased tenfold.

Odyssey is so abrim with lore and info about ancient Greece that at times you really feel you have been transported back in time. The developers did a superb job on recreating the hustle and bustle of Athens of yesteryear, but also of the whole of ancient Greece. Even for those who already know a lot about the myths, being able to put a story to a place is a mind-boggling experience.

Overall, if you enjoyed the action and open world freedom of Breath of the Wild, then Odyssey is the choice for you.

3. A Short Hike

Despite being a smaller and shorter game than Breath of the Wild, A Short Hike  may be just what you are looking for if you liked the climbing, gliding, and exploring of BOTW

There is no combat in A Short Hike, but that doesn’t take anything away from the experience. In fact, it augments it. In a world abrim with intriguing NPCs, there is a lot to keep you busy in the game.

Reaching the end of the game doesn’t require a huge effort, so A Short Hike is great for those looking for a quick game to play like Breath of the Wild. It can usually be picked up for cheap, too, so it’s also an option for those on a budget.

2. Skyrim

In terms of the vast exploration involved in BOTW, there’s no game even close to rivalling it as much as Skyrim does. Most people who have played the Elder Scrolls game have great memories of wandering around the cold, mountainous land of the Nord’s for the first time, and it can still be an incredible experience for newcomers, too.

Quite simply, Skyrim is one of the greatest open-world RPGs of all time, and it’s a game that all fans of the genre should try at least once.

Skyrim is far more story-oriented than BOTW, but the sense of magical awe is very similar, and you can spend hours upon end stumbling upon new areas and quests to explore.

1. Immortals Fenyx Rising

If you are looking for the game that is the most similar to Breath of the Wild, then you’ve found it in Immortals Fenyx Rising.

Arguably, Immortals is easier than BOTW, as you are given a lot of upgrades early on and there is essentially no grinding required to level up your character.

The aesthetics of the two games are very similar, with Immortals Fenyx Rising providing an even more vibrant and colorful artstyle.

For those looking for a more light-hearted touch to a game, Immortals Fenyx Rising may even be better than BOTW, as the humor is very well written and implemented.

All in all, Immortals Fenyx Rising is the closest thing you can find to Breath of the Wild for the Nintendo Switch, and this should be your first port of call if you’re after the most similar game.
